Nick Lacey explains that Genres are always changing and that they are fluid NOT static.
Old conventions make the viewer feel more comfortable in what they expect: Nick Lacey says that genres use the old conventions but combine them with something new.
Genres exist because they are both popular with audiences and producers.
As an audience we like genre!
1. When our expectations are fulfilled it provides pleasure.(and when disrupted)
2. We gain pleasure from knowing the formula and trying to predict narrative outcomes. (and feel rewarded when we get it right)
3. Audiences feel safe and are reassured by the familiar.
4. It allows an informed choice.
This is one of the reasons why my choice of typical music conventions follow in roughly the same way. The girls all look 'risky' in their clothing and all sing about one theme: love.
The audience in my video: Taylor Swift's You Belong With Me know (with the help of old conventions) that the girl gets the boy and vice versa in the end and that there is a happy ending.
